Do You Need a Permit to Elope at Stoksness?
Technically, no wedding or elopement-specific permit is required, but you do need to purchase an entry ticket to access the beach and mountain area, as it sits on privately owned land. You’ll stop at the Viking Café and Guesthouse, located at the entrance to Stoksness, to grab your pass. This ticket helps maintain the area and gives you access to explore the black sand dunes, coastline, and even the Viking movie set still standing there!
Pro Tip: The Viking Café opens seasonally, and hours can change depending on weather or staffing, so plan to arrive during their open hours or contact them ahead of time if you’re going at sunrise or sunset.
Best Time of Year to Elope in Stoksness Iceland
While Iceland’s beauty shifts with the seasons, not all months are created equal when it comes to comfort, light, and accessibility. Here’s what you need to know:
Best Months: May through September
- May & September: Cooler but still accessible; fewer crowds, soft golden light, and a good chance of decent weather!
- June through August: Warmer, more daylight (even midnight sun!), and easier road conditions, but also the busiest time of year!!
- October – April: Snow, ice, and limited daylight. Not ideal for eloping here unless you’re up for a full winter elopement vibe with icy roads and wild weather.
If you’re hoping to avoid crowds but still want bearable weather, late May or early September are your sweet spots!
How to Get There: Closest Airport & Towns
Stoksness is located just outside of Höfn, a beautiful coastal town that feels like the perfect cozy home base after a full day of adventuring!
- Closest Town for Lodging: Höfn (about a 15–20 minute drive from Stoksness)
- Closest Airport: Keflavík International Airport (KEF) this is Iceland’s main international airport, located near Reykjavik. From there, it’s about a 6–7 hour scenic drive to Höfn.
I recommend renting a 4×4 vehicle so you can take your time, stop at waterfalls and glaciers along the way, and explore without worrying about road conditions.

There are a few great lodging options in and around Höfn, but if you’re looking for a clean, modern, and super convenient stay, I highly recommend Hotel Höfn. I stayed here and it was the perfect place warm breakfast, stunning views, and only a short drive from the beach.

- Brunnhóll Country Guesthouse: a little farther out, but great views and local beauty!
How Busy Will It Be At Stoksness Iceland For Your Session?
Compared to major Icelandic sites like Skógafoss or Reynisfjara, Stoksness is relatively quiet but it’s gained popularity in recent years. That means summer months (especially midday) can bring a few groups of tourists or photographers. Best time to avoid crowds? Go at sunrise or just before sunset for that dreamy light and way more privacy. Most visitors pop in during the afternoon, so planning your ceremony early or late in the day will give you the most intimate experience. Also, that entry ticket from the Viking Café? It helps ensure not everyone just rolls in unannounced. It’s a good system that keeps the location beautiful and supported.
